Transcript - Januvia - Linked to Pancreatitis and Pancreatic Cancer
Diabetes drugs Januvia, Janumet, Byetta and Victoza have been associated with pancreatitis, necrotizing pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, hemorrhaging and death, and are now also linked to heart failure.
Diabetes affects more than 23 million people in the US alone and about 90-95 percent of those affected have type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the US and costs approximately $132 billion per year in direct and indirect medical expenses. These type II diabetes drugs were approved by the FDA as early as 2005.
In 2009, the FDA issued a revision to the warning label of Januvia’s side effects to include pancreatic and thyroid cancer. However, research by the Journal of American College of Cardiology studied 7,600 Januvia patients and found an elevated risk of heart failure. Recent lawsuits against the manufacturers and promoters of these type II diabetes drugs claim the companies over promoted its benefits and under warned against the risks.
