Testosterone therapy manufacturers are facing numerous lawsuits after men who were prescribed low testosterone or "low-t" treatments suffered stroke, heart attack and death. Testosterone replacement has been called a "wonder drug" for middle- aged men worried about a decline in their sexual health and energy levels. More than 5 million people in the United States are currently taking testosterone. Prescriptions have increased more than five-fold in recent years, with sales exceeding 1.6 billion dollars, surpassing Viagra. Recent studies indicate that men over 65 had a double risk of a heart attack within 90 days of starting hormone therapy. Among men under the age of 65 with a history of heart disease, there was a two-to-three fold increased risk of a heart attack and another study was discontinued due to a high rate of heart attacks.
This type of therapy is often administered as a gel, patch or injection and may include the following products: Androderm, Androgel, Axiron, Fortesta, Striant, Testim, Testoderm, Testopel, Vogelxo.
Doctors worry that these "low-t" treatments are being over-prescribed, due in part to aggressive marketing by drug manufacturers. Although the FDA is now investigating the safety of testosterone treatments, testosterone products remain on the shelf.
