Risperdal, a powerful anti-psychotic sold by Johnson and Johnson, has been linked to gynecomastia, or the development of male breasts, a permanent condition requiring corrective surgery. For years, Risperdal was primarily prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism.
In recent years, Johnson and Johnson reportedly encouraged doctors to prescribe Risperdal for the unapproved treatment of ADHD in children, resulting in hundreds of thousands of prescriptions. The company has been fined and recently agreed to pay more than $2.2 billion in criminal and civil fines to settle accusations that it improperly promoted Risperdal.
Gynecomastia is linked to elevated prolactin hormones. The hormones can also cause milk production and delay male sexual development in young boys. Studies have shown that as many as 87% of children taking Risperdal can have elevated prolactin hormones. This side effect, while humiliating and psychologically damaging, is only one example of how this potentially dangerous drug is affecting innocent consumers. New research has also shown that children and teenagers face a three-fold risk for developing type-2 diabetes in the first year of Risperdal treatment. So far, nearly 500 lawsuits have been filed.
