Biomet has agreed to a $56 million settlement of its artificial hip implant claims. Biomet agreed to pay a base rate of $200,000 each to hundreds of people who received artificial hips that were later replaced.
Biomet's metal on metal implants are designed to create a new, smoothly functioning joint that replaces painful bone on bone contact. Some patients experienced muscle damage related to metal shavings released into the body and dangerous levels of metal were found in the bloodstreams. Affected patients are being diagnosed with Metallosis, or metal poisoning, and undergoing costly revision surgeries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states over 330 thousand hip replacements are performed in the U.S. each year. According to court records there are 500,000 U.S. citizens with an all-metal hip implant. Currently, there are more then 950 Biomet Hip lawsuits filed. Although other hip implants have been removed from the market, Biomet's M2A Magnum has not been recalled.
