A Chicago law firm is the first to announce a nationwide class-action lawsuit against Pilgrims Pride, the poultry maker that recalled 27.4 million pounds of turkey and chicken deli meat last month because of potential contamination with listeria. An outbreak of listeriosis has caused seven deaths, 50 illnesses and three miscarriages or stillbirths, health officials say. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that two samples taken from the plant in Franconia, Pa., matched the strain of listeria that infected patients. The company closed the plant Oct. 12. People affected are in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, Michigan and Massachusetts. The suit, filed by Kenneth B. Moll & Associates, seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
